The Social Benefits of Moving to a Senior Apartment

My wife and I did just that in 2023.

We turned 78 in 2023, were in good health and had a supportive network of friends and great relationships with our families.
However, the signs were posted. It was becoming harder to keep up with the needs of living at home; we couldn’t do as much physically as we once did, and moving to an independent living community that also had with assisted living and skilled nursing centers just down the hall was appealing.
Today we are approaching our second anniversary and are completely happy with the move. Much of the appeal is the fact that we have a wealth of new friends. Besides having ready-made meal companions, these people are good role models for how to meet the challenges of aging.
The facility we chose was a good choice for health reasons as well. In 2024, I contracted a blood infection after a heart valve operation. As a consequence, I was on an antibiotic infusion 24 hours a day for six weeks. You heard that correctly: All day, every day, 42 times.

I’m amazed at the vigor and eagerness of many of the folks here, even those who are well into their 90s. Being surrounded by people who seem to meet the challenges of aging head on is inspiring.
You may not be ready to move. You may not want to move. But most of us end up needing to move. There are benefits to moving into a senior living apartment. Don’t wait until it is too late and you can no longer get out and about to meet people. Besides, most of these places have a waiting list. You need to be on that list before it is time.
